I had the pleasure of meeting the Ele’s Place team a couple of years ago at an event. I heard first hand from families who shared their stories of how Ele’s Place helped them after suffering the loss of a father, mother, child, sibling, or a grandparent. I was so impressed with their commitment to children and families; I knew this was an organization I wanted to support.It is important for children to understand when these devastating things happen—they are not alone. They are not responsible for any of the bad things which happened to their family and there are other kids their age going through very similar experiences. At Ele’s Place, these children are able to begin the healing process together.
As First Lady of Michigan, I have had the opportunity to combine my support for Ele’s Place with the chance to raise awareness statewide on the crucial topic of grieving children.
West Michigan is a compassionate community and supports the need for a center dedicated to grieving children. I know of no other children’s grief program that is more effective and as committed to quality as Ele’s Place.
Today, I applaud the Grand Rapids community leaders who recognize the critical need to support grieving children. I have seen how Ele’s Place changes the lives of grieving children in my own community of Ann Arbor. West Michigan families will be fortunate to have an Ele’s Place of their own.
I’m not a therapist and I’m not a counselor—I am a Mom.
As a Mom, our job is to protect our children and to nurture and support them. Ele’s Place has that same goal. The children learn to cope and begin to heal. They have made a profound difference in the lives of grieving children and I am so proud to be a part of this effort.
