Support Group Facilitators

Bereavement Peer Support Groups - Ann Arbor, Flint, Grand Rapids, and Lansing:

One of the primary services provided by Ele’s Place is our peer support group program for children and their families who are grieving the death of a family member or close friend. These groups are organized according to the child’s school grade and/or developmental level, ages 3 - 18. Each peer group is facilitated by a team of four trained adult volunteers. These teams of volunteers meet every six weeks to plan the upcoming discussions and activities for the groups.

Requirements for becoming a support group facilitator:

  • At least 19 years of age

  • Must be able to commit to volunteering one evening (four hours) per week for a minimum of one year

  • Must complete our 23-hour training program. Our training provides a framework for grief and loss, reviews the developmental stages of children, stresses the importance of empathic listening, and provides instruction regarding how to be an effective facilitator. This training program is generally offered twice each year, usually in Spring and Fall.

  • Must participate in a pre-training and a post-training interview during business hours

  • Must attend an annual In-Service continuing education session, usually on a Saturday

  • Must undergo a criminal background check

We will consider each applicant on a case-by-case basis, and reserve the right to select individuals based on the best fit for the organization.

Availability of Facilitator positions varies between branches and time of year.
